Solid objects and dust ingress protection testing up to IP 6X

The IP XX coding on electrical devices indicates the degree of protection of that particular device against damage caused by the intrusion of foreign bodies like dust and moisture. Telefication can test your device against the international standard IEC 60529 up to IP 6X, the highest level of protection against touching and penetrating solid objects.

Electronic devices such as mobile phones, tablets and cameras have become an integral part of our daily essentials, both professionally and in everyday live. This has increased the demand for rugged devices that can be used outdoor as well as under demanding circumstances at work. For the latter, think of industrial equipment such as regulators and meters that have to be protected from dust and moisture. Manufactures cater to this demand by producing and marketing dustproof and waterproof devices.

IEC 60529

The IP (International Protection, also known as Ingress Protection) ratings consists of the letters IP, followed by two digits. The first digit (IP XX) indicates the level of protection against touching and ingress by foreign bodies of various sizes. The second digit (IP XX) indicates the degree of protection against moisture. The IP rating is standardized internationally in IEC 60529.

Protection levels

The degree of solid object ingress protection consists of the following levels (source: Wikipedia):

  1. No protection against contact and ingress of objects;
  2. >50 mm: any large surface of the body, such as the back of a hand, but no protection against deliberate contact with a body part;
  3. >12.5 mm: Fingers or similar objects;
  4. >2.5 mm: Tools, thick wires, etc.;
  5. >1 mm: most wires, slender screws, etc.;
  6. Dust protected: dust intrusion is not entirely prevented, but it must not enter in sufficient quantity to interfere with the satisfactory operation of the equipment;
  7. Dust tight: no ingress of dust; complete protection against contact (dust tight). A vacuum must be applied. Test duration of up to 8 hours based on air flow.

Example: an IP 54 device is dust-resistant (level 5) and splash-proof (level 4, also see: IP XX testing: liquid intrusion up to IP X8.

Telefication’s fully equipped test facilities enable IP testing in accordance with IEC 60529. Testing includes assessing the protective properties of the equipment against ingress of solid bodies of various sizes and various degrees of protection.
